Mildura Weekly – 13/12/13 27 www.milduraphonebook.com.au IN THE RIVERLAND THIS WEEK Bev Story (08) 8588 7203 or email beverley.story@bigpond.com Pat a worthy Citizen of the Year • From Page 25 Pat’s talents have reaped many rewards for the Loxton Christmas Lights Festival, including winning the Riverland Tourism Association Fes- tival and Event category in 2005 and 2009; SA Great Riverland and Mur- raylands Community Award 2002 (highly commended in 2002); Loxton Australia Day Award Event of the Year for 2001, 2004, 2005, 2009 and 2012; and South Australian Tourism Awards winner of “Festival and Events catego- ry” in 2006, 2008, 2009, with a silver award in 2007 and 2013. Pat was delighted with picking up the South Australian silver award for last year’s festival, because it was a country town competing with metro- politan events for the awards. “We were thrilled – it would have been nice to have won, but there are so many others who run excellent fes- tivals,” Pat said. Pat has represented the Loxton Christmas Lights Commit- tee at the National Tourism Awards on three occasions - in Sydney, Mel- bourne and Hobart. At the 2009 Riv- erland Tourism Awards, she received a Commendation Award for Outstand- ing Contribution by an individual. Pat also served six years on the Loxton Arts Council as a committee member, secretary and publicity of- ficer. It is one of a number of organ- isations that she helped hold together for many years, but which have now fallen by the wayside. Pat was a member of the Loxton Camera Club for 24 years until it dis- banded in 1997, serving as secretary and treasurer. In 1998 she was award- ed Life membership for her 24 years of service to the club. Likewise, she was an avid member of the Loxton Ladies’ Singing Probus group, which has entertained clients of the districts day care centres for many years. However, she said their performance this week was their last, due to dwindling numbers. “There’s just not enough of us now – people are involved in other things,” she said. “Our last song was ‘That’s All’ – we changed the wording a bit to let them know we wouldn’t be singing anymore.” Pat was an inaugural member of the Australian Plant Society when the branch was established in 1968 (formerly Society for Growing Austra- lian Plants), and held many executive roles during those 40 years. She has also volunteered in sever- al sections at the Loxton Show. “In the early years I was a steward for flowers, and convenor of art a couple of times while I was with the Arts Council, and I helped the convenor of the photog- raphy for 14 or 15 years,” she said. Pat has long been involved with St Albert’s Catholic Church and school, with duties including preparing the weekly bulletins for a decade, trea- surer of school board and auditor for seven years, co-coordinator of rosters for ministers, readers, cleaners and working bees, and she is still a mem- ber of the church finance committee. Pat and her mother Joyce were in- strumental in compiling a book called ‘A History of the Catholic Church in Loxton’ for the period 1894-1999 to celebrate the Loxton Catholic Church 2000 Jubilee. She also helped to de- sign and plant the garden for the new church in 1989. Another group no longer in exis- tence that she served with was Loxton Marching Girls Team. She was a member of the senior marching team when she was asked to temporarily take on the role of in- structor for the midgets. Pat ended up in the role for seven years, while the same group of girls moved through the junior ranks. “There have been a few things that have come and gone,” Pat said of community groups. However, ever changing with the times, for the past 12 years she has volunteered at the Loxton Internet Centre for three hours a week, assist- ing in receptionist duties and intro- ducing clients to the computer world. Pat also made significant con- tributions to her employers over her working life, and was recognised by the State Government when she re- ceived “Government Services Achiever Award” for excellent service to the South Australian community in 1990. She was also nominated in 1997 and 1998 for a public service medal as part of the Queen’s Birthday Honours presentations. Leon said Pat had, without a doubt, made a significant contribu- tion to the Loxton community, con- tinuously striving to present a bigger and better Christmas program every year. “Pat is very much a behind-the- scenes worker who seeks little rec- ognition for her efforts,” the Mayor said. Firearms seized A 45-year-old Renmark man has been arrested after po- lice seized more than 80 firearms and ammunition from his home. Renmark police re- sponded to an incident on Sunday morning where a man was allegedly showing off a firearm at a local busi- ness. Police patrols subse- quently spoke to the man and then attended his home address where they found a cache of firearms, parts of firearms and ammunition. They seized a total of 86 items and arrested and charged the man with a number of firearms offenc- es, including possessing in- secure prescribed firearms, having insecure ammuni- tion and carrying an offen- sive weapon in public. The man has been bailed to appear in Berri Magis- trate’s Court on January 13. Police have indicated they will apply for surrender of the firearms, and have the man’s firearms licence re- voked. 155 Langtree Avenue, Mildura | Phone: 5022 2933 On call emergency 0419 381 125 www.tankarddental.com.au Monday - Wednesday 8am to 7pm (by appointment) Thursday - Friday 8am to 6pm (by appointment) Saturday 9am to 1pm (by appointment) SURGERY Keeping your teeth healthy 160 Bromlely Road, Robinvale Phone: 5026 3536 Britt St (Hospital Site) Ouyen Phone: 5092 1121 SUBSCRIBE NOW Great Christmas Gift Idea
