Mildura Weekly : Friday January 24 2014 Vol 8 No 12
www.milduraweekly.com.au 70 Mildura Weekly – 24/01/14 A FULL complement of Solo and Sidecar speedway stars will rock Mildura’s Olympic Park Speedway this Sunday as part of the Silver City Express-Mildura Masters event. In what will be an electric Aus- tralia Day celebration this Sunday, Olympic Park Speedway will be alight with talent, as the field in- cludes visiting international Grand Prix stars and State and World Side- car champions. The elite solo field will be head- ed by Polish champion Adam Skor- nicki and young Danish sensation Rasmus Jensen – who has already tasted World Youth Cup glory while enjoying a regular spot in the British Speedway League. Joining Skornicki and Jensen will be newly crowned New South Wales champion Brady Kurtz, with fellow NSW rider Tyler King and Australian finalists and podium fin- ishers Mason Campton and Justin Sedgmen to also be in attendance. Last week’s reigning Internation- al Challenge winner Dakota North from Shepparton will also compete in the solo field. The sidecar division will also be star-studded, and will feature four of Australia’s best – including dual World Champion Mick Headland/ Paul Waters, British Champion Mark Cossar/Daz Whetstone, and Mil- dura’s two best sidecar exponents – Warren Monson/Matt Morgan and Byren Gates/Mick O’Loughlin. Solo stars will ride heats and then take part in a final, which will decide the ‘Master,’ while the Sidecars will work to the same end, with the final being decided among the top four contestants. Skornicki now has the benefit of learning the Olympic Park track – after racing last weekend and taking part in a midweek practice session. He will be ready for his opponents, especially now that the weather has cooled down following last week’s heatwave. Dakota North announced that last week would be his last ride in Australia, but following his great win he was in early contact with the Mildura Motorcycle Club to ask if he could be fitted into the field for the Masters event. North is heading to Poland this coming European summer, where he will concentrate on riding Polish League and Swedish League without the extra travel of riding in the UK. North will base himself in Lesz- no, where there has always been a strong Australian and Mildura con- nection – especially through Leigh Adams and Jason Lyons. NSW visitors Brady Kurtz, Tyler King and Mason Campton will also fit into this company, and will cer- tainly look to keep local star Justin Sedgmen on his toes, especially as Sedgmen will be wanting to relegate the international and visiting riders back a peg or two just to show who is best around the Mildura circuit. Campton did well in the recent 2014 Australian Title to take the po- dium in Adelaide, and will be hun- gry for top competition as he missed out on a British work permit last year. He is an accomplished rider, and with the likes of Sedgmen, North, Kurtz and King he will give the visit- ing internationals something to re- member about Mildura. Rasmus Jensen will be a most interesting inclusion as he has been visiting Perth for the season and has enjoyed his stay down under. It is certain that with his back- ground of riding both 50cc and 80cc in his homeland and doing so well as a junior, he will be like the Austra- lian junior riders – well equipped to handle himself on any track. Sidecar fans will get a blast from each heat as they will see the top rid- ers going strong against each other for the Masters crown. Mick Headland/Paul Waters are wonderful around Mildura, and will have to watch as Englishman Mark Cossar/Daz Whetstone have got the Australian tracks sorted, and are giv- ing some grief to riders all around the country. Cossar’s plan to come to Aus- tralia for an extended term associ- ated firstly with the Oceania Sidecar Championship, which was run suc- cessfully in Mildura in November, and has been a wonderful learning experience. To have time to attend to bike set up and learn more intimately the nuances of Australian conditions is standing Cossar in wonderful stead. Cossar is certainly the best rider to come out of England, and he will be hard – even for Monson/Morgan, Gates/O’Loughlin and Headland/ Waters to toss. This foursome will provide won- derful racing for speedway patrons enjoyment. Support events will also be of great interest, with a B grade division of solos and sidecars to be included. The cream of Australia’s young talent will also be on display throughout the night, with 10 youngsters to ride on 2500cc ma- chines. The field includes finalists from last week’s Australian Junior 125cc Title, and will be headed by Mat- thew Gilmore, who finished second in the Individual Title behind Mil- dura’s Jaimon Lidsey and third place Declyn Adams, as well as Jett Muller, Max Marson, Declan Knowles, Aden Clare, Zach Cook and Sheldon Gill against local rider, Jordan Stewart and Western Australia’s Jack Smith – son of three-time British Speedway Champion Andy Smith. Gates for the Silver City Express- Mildura Masters open at 5pm, with patrons reminded that some free grandstand accommodation is avail- able, and there is no BYO by law.
