Go back to the New Year period and ask yourself whether you set realistic goals? Even if you didn’t it’s not too late to start reassessing those goals. This year can still be YOUR year. The problem most people have is that their goals are too broad – especially when it comes to losing weight. Losing weight is one of the biggest New Year’s resolutions made worldwide. Some people set the goal to lose 20kg – which would have sounded like a solid number when surrounded by family and friends over the holiday period. Most people however don’t plan on how they want to lose that weight – ASAP or gradually over the course of a year. The best idea is to break your weight loss goals down into a 12 month period, and then break that figure down into six months, and then one month. By doing this you will create a realistic goal, and be in a better position to achieve it. So if you did want to lose 20kg, and in the first month have only managed to lose two kilograms, are you considering quitting because your goal now seems far away? Or are you going to stick it out? The truth is that you need to be realistic – as a two kilogram loss is a great start, and with another 11 months to go realistically your 20kg goal is still in sight. That’s why long-term goals with small milestones are ideal. When it comes to exercise it’s important to start with little steps. Don’t over-commit and try and exercise every day when you know that lifestyle and motivation can sometimes be a recipe for failure. Start with two, 45 minute sessions per week, and ensure you establish what exercise means to you – whether it’s walking, gym or gym classes – before you start. Remember that a year is 52 weeks, and if the first month hasn’t been that great don’t stress – there’s still 11 months left in the year!
