www.milduraweekly.com.au 74 Mildura Weekly – 07/02/14 By ADAM LUITJES MONTHS of hard work, sacrifice and discipline will be worth it for half- brothers Bernard Young, 26, and Nathaniel Schil- ling, 20, as they partici- pate in their first Mildura Open Powerlifting Com- petition tomorrow. Competing along- side 25 powerlifters from South Australia and Vic- toria in the Merbein P10 College gym, the pair are aiming to deadlift, bench press and squat their way to a gold medal. Competing in the 93kg weight division, Bernard said he’s looking forward to his first com- petition. “I’m excited and ready to go,” he said. “I have prepared well, and my training has been spot on, so I’m feeling confi- dent. “I’m not worried about the other competi- tors, I just want to beat my deadlift personal best of 220kg.” Having started the sport five months ago, Bernard said he’s sur- prised by how much he’s enjoyed powerlifting. “I became curious af- ter a few mates started,” he said. “I used to lift weights, so I thought I had a good technique, but I actually had no idea. “Correct technique is more important than anything else, and now that I have been training for a while it’s become a lot easier. “I’m training three times a week, and it’s something that I really enjoy.” With Nathaniel studying in Adelaide, Ber- nard said he has enjoyed spending quality time in the gym with his brother. “We have been spur- ring each other along,” he said.”We’re both very competitive, so we drive each other to succeed. “We encourage each other but there is also plenty of banter. “Our whole family is coming along tomor- row, which makes the day even more special.” Nathaniel, a competi- tor in the 74kg weight di- vision, said he’s also hop- ing to record a personal best in the deadlift. “I’m aiming for 180kg,” he said. “I haven’t been training as long as Bernard, so I’m not putting any pressure on myself. “I’m entering for the experience, but it would be fantastic if I could achieve my goal.” After following his brother into powerlift- ing, Nathaniel said he’s enjoyed throwing himself into the rigorous training. “I’m definitely a lot stronger,” he said. “When you start seeing results it motivates you to keep working hard. “It’s good to train alongside Bernard be- cause he’s always encour- aging me to push myself. “I don’t think I’d ever be able to lift more than him, but it’s something I’m striving for.” Mildura Powerlifting Club secretary Joel Rid- ings said this year’s com- petition is the biggest in its history. “We are happy with the number of entrants,” he said. “Compared to last year we have double the number of partici- pants, with 70 percent of them entering their first competition. “We are also expect- ing more than 100 spec- tators, so the gym will be packed. “With the quality of athletes participating, I wouldn’t be surprised if records are broken.” The Mildura Open Powerlifting Competition will start at 10am tomor- row at the Merbein P10 College gym. • POWER PLAY: Brothers Bernard Young and Nathaniel Schilling, ABOVE, will compete in their first Mildura Open Powerlifting Competition tomorrow.
