Mildura’s Finest Retirement Villas By ALAN ERSKINE LONG-TIME Red Cliffs resident and political hopeful Mark Cory can’t understand why some peo- ple can’t grasp the significance of paedophile activity. The 35-year-old ex-shearer, engineer and single parent of one says he won’t rest until child safety gets the attention it de- serves. And offenders get the pun- ishment they deserve. He scoffs at the notion that once child sex offenders are ‘re- habilitated,’ they should again be free to roam society at large without some sort of checking/ tracking/monitoring system. He supports an Australia- wide sex offender registry, and makes no secret of the fact that radio shock-jock and high-pro- file media personality Derryn Hinch, PICTURED, is one of his heroes in the fight against pae- dophilia. Hinch, 70, is not long out of jail after spending 50 nights locked up for failing to pay a fine incurred after breaching a sup- pression order about Melbourne woman Jill Meagher’s killer. He had been ordered to pay a $100,000 contempt of court fine – or face jail. He choose jail, “as a matter of principle.” Mark Cory describes Hinch as “a champion...a legend.” He doesn’t want to get into a legal argument about whether Hinch was guilty or not...he just wants to subscribe to the same argu- ments as Hinch – for the protec- tion of all victims of sex-related crimes. They want tougher penali- ties. They want sex offenders identified so communities know who they are dealing with. Hinch refers to what is now known as ‘Megan’s Law’ in the USA. Megan Kanka was a seven- year-old lured into the home of a known sex offender, raped and murdered. As a result, the then President Clinton passed a law requiring law enforcement au- thorities to make information available to the public regard- ing convicted sex offenders. Hinch wants the same laws here. The sooner the better. So does Mark. And he has the backing of some heavyweights, including Dr Freda Biggs, OA, Emeritius Professor in child de- velopment and child safety at the University of SA. After voicing his concerns to Professor Biggs, concern that he had earlier expressed through the columns of the Mildura Weekly, Mark received an email reply that showed that he and Prof Biggs were on the same ‘fre- quency.’ “Psychiatrists in the USA have tried to decriminalise child sex offences on the grounds that paedophilia is as normal as ho- mosexuality,” she said. “Others have tried to label it as a men- tal illness.” They say this is rub- bish...child sex abuse is just a shocking crime against defence- less and vulnerable kids. Prof Biggs referred Mark to her recent publications, one titled; ‘Child protection - the Essential Guide,’ and the other ‘From Victim to Offender,’ the result of lengthy discussions with 85 convicted sex offend- ers. A lot of child sex offenders started with pornography, and some child sex offenders - about one in four - were the victims of abuse as a child. “Prison doesn’t cure them, but it prevents them from of- fending,” she said. Prof Briggs said this week’s Four Corners program on ABC television was sure to open a few eyes. “I have been told that this case resulted in an increase in men adopting or buying chil- dren to use for sex in copycat style,” she said. The Mildura Weekly’s Grant Maynard watched the program with a mixture of horror and disgust. It centred on Australian Peter Truong and his American partner Mark Newton. To the world, Truong and Newton ap- peared model parents with a beautiful son. But the happy facade concealed the darkest of secrets. They claimed the boy - ‘Adam’ – was their surrogate child, but they had actually bought the lad, the result of an unwanted pregnancy, for US$8000. The pair sexually trained and groomed their son to be exploited by a network of men, known as ‘boy lovers.’ The abuse began before his second birthday. The pair flew their son around the world for other men to abuse – the pages in ‘Adam’s’ passport were full by the time he was three. After world-wide investiga- tions into an online child por- nography ring by authorities in Australia, New Zealand and the United States, Truong and New- ton were last year convicted of child sex offences in the United States. Newton is currently in a US Federal prison serving a 40-year- sentence. Truong is serving 30 years. Truong, who was sexually abused as a child, got a reduced sentence in a deal struck with prosecutors because he prom- ised to lead police to other pae- dophiles. The pair were members of a super secret ring that operated online, and whose members remained hidden behind walls of sophisticated encryption for almost two decades. During that time, members of the network were able to produce millions of images and videos depicting the sexual exploitation of children. That’s what crusaders like Derryn Hinch and Mark Cory are determined to stamp out. Melbourne radio broadcaster and high-profile media identity Derryn Hinch feels so strongly about the safety of children, protecting them from sexual predators, that he went to jail for it. He has lots of supporters, including Red Cliffs political hopeful Mark Cory. As Mark says... It’s a simple matter of child protection To those of us who have children in our lives, whether they are our own, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, or students... here is something to make you chuckle. Whenever your children are out of control, you can take com- fort from the thought that even God’s omnipotence did not ex- tend to His own children. After creating heaven and earth, God created Adam and Eve. And the first thing he said was “DON’T! “ “Don’t what ?” Adam replied. “Don’t eat the forbidden fruit,” God said. “Forbidden fruit? We have forbidden fruit? Hey Eve..we have forbidden fruit! “ “NoWay!“ “Yes way! “ “Do NOT eat the fruit!“ said God. “Why?“ “Because I am your Father and I said so!“ God replied, wonder- ing why He hadn’t stopped creation after making the elephants. A few minutes later, God saw His children having an apple break and He was ticked off! “Didn’t I tell you not to eat the fruit?“ God asked. “Uh huh,” Adam replied. “Then why did you?“ said the Father. “I don”t know,” said Eve. “She started it!“ Adam said. “Did not!“ “Did too!“ “DID NOT! “ Having had it with the two of them, God’s punishment was that Adam and Eve should have children of their own. Thus the pattern was set and it has never changed.
