Mildura Weekly – 14/03/14 63 www.milduraphonebook.com.au Motoring’s holy ground lives on GERMANY’S Nurburgring, probably the most famous race track in the world in its Nordschleife guise, was last week set to be snapped up by an American invest- ment group. The legendary circuit was known as one of the longest and most dangerous tracks in the world during the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s, playing host to some of the most epic racing battles of all time, and some of the most famous crashes. It was the track at which former For- mula 1 champion Niki Lauda had the fiery crash in 1976 that left him scarred for life and was the subject of a recent Hollywood movie, Rush. The track was taken off the Formula 1 calendar that year and replaced on the GP circuit in the 1980s by a second, much shorter, safer, and many would ar- gue less spectacular Nurburgring layout, however the Nordschleife has remained popular with motoring enthusiasts and car makers alike and attracts thousands of drivers each year, keen to put their skills and their machines to the ultimate test. The circuit went bankrupt in 2012, leading most recently to a bidding war between American investment group HIG Capital, several major German car makers and Formula 1 supremo, Bernie Ecclesstone. It was reported last week that HIG Capital looked to be the likely purchaser of the complex with a bid somewhere between $82million and $96million, which included the two tracks that make up the complex and an F1-themed amusement park. While the Nurburgring has remained a popular venue, it’s the infamous Nord- schleife layout that has ensured the Nur- burgring will remain prominent in mo- torsport folklore, and for good reason. Here are some interesting facts about this legendary collection of tarmac straights and bends: - the original circuit was more than 22 kilometres long. It’s since been short- ened to about 20 kilometres. - since it was completed in 1927, the circuit, which for a time was known as ‘Green Hell’ due to the dangers and chal- lenges it posed, claimed the lives of be- tween two and 12 drivers each year. - it has 73 corners (33 left-handers and 40 right-handers). - more than 300 metres separate the lowest and highest points of the circuit. - it’s open to the public for much of the year and costs about $35 per lap.
