Mildura Weekly : Friday March 21 2014 Vol 8 No 20
Mildura Weekly – 21/03/14 3 www.milduraphonebook.com.au By ALAN ERSKINE THE biggest recreational vehicle ‘roadshow’ in the Southern Hemisphere, the Campervan and Mo- torhome Club of Aus- tralia rally, will make Robinvale its adventure playground for 10 days from Monday, March 31. The town’s popula- tion will almost double - with the local economy expected to benefit by up- wards of $2 million - as 900 recreational vehicles and their 1800 occupants from all over Australia hit town. The ‘advance guard’ is already here, with more than 300 volunteers hav- ing a week to set up what will become a marquee city and vehicle camping centre at Centenary Re- serve and Riverside Park alongside the Murray River. Other vehicles have had to camp elsewhere, including Robinvale Car- avan Park and at Euston Club. While the site will be restricted to CMCA members, there will be an Open Day - Saturday, April 5, when members of the public will be made welcome - at a modest $5 a head. The rally has been 12 months in the plan- ning, a logistical and or- ganisational challenge for organisers, and tour- ist attractions and towns within a 300-kilometre of Robinvale, with the ex- ception of non-RV friend- ly towns like Merbein, are set to reap the rewards. Rally manager Ray Jones has been a man on a mission since learning of Robinvale’s successful submission more than 12 months ago, often with 2am starts and late-night finishes to ensure the 2014 rally’s success. “It’s been a steep learning curve...exciting, challenging and reward- ing,” Ray said this week. The long-time man- ager of the Euston Club says he has had to put life “almost on hold” in re- cent months as rally plans started to take shape. “This is the biggest event ever to hit the re- gion, and it will showcase Robinvale-Euston and our neighbouring towns to a huge new audience,” he said. “We’ve got an inter- esting program planned on site, such as seminars, workshops, dance nights, poetry and other enter- tainment, but many in- tending RV participants are planning side trips that will see them visit places like Mildura, Wen- tworth, Swan Hill, Lake Boga and other places of interest, as well as major attractions such as pad- dlesteamer rides, Mungo National Park and winer- ies.” A huge bonus for some regions will come at the end of the rally, from April 7, when the RV’s depart Robinvale for all points of the com- pass, calling in at places of interest either on their way back home, or as they continue their trav- els around Australia. A group of 50 has already booked a tour of Mungo and Wentworth. Ray says he knowns of one large group planning an ex- tended stay at Buronga Caravan Park, which he said was being recognised as one of the most RV- friendly parks in the na- tion. The most stagger- ing statistic is that the 900 recreational vehicles booked in for Robinvale represent just three per- cent of CMCA member- ship, with in excess of 35,000 RV’s travelling Australia annually. • Continued Page 6 First suggested in 2011, it’s been 12 months in the planning stages, and has meant a mammoth logistical operation to cater for almost 2000 people in 900 motor homes, but finally...
