www.milduraweekly.com.au 76 Mildura Weekly – 21/03/14 By ADAM LUITJES MILDURA East Cricket Club’s Tom Vadlja has written himself into the records books once again af- ter winning his seventh Sunraysia Cricket Association Les Innes Med- al on Wednesday night. The 42-year-old was a runaway winner with 15 votes, ahead of Coomealla-Wentworth’s Alex Mel- lor (12) and Irymple captain Rhys Webb (11). Tom is the only cricketer in his- tory to win the prestigious award seven times. His first award came in the 1992/93 season at 21, and he went on to win the award in 1994/95, 1997/98, 2000/01, 2009/10 and 2011/12. This season the all-rounder showed he had no signs of slowing down, taking 23 wickets and mak- ing 642 runs in 13 games. “Winning another medal is a proud moment,” Tom said. “I thought I’d finish in the top three, but my money was on Rhys Webb to win. “It’s a great accomplishment but it’s not something I strive for, all I’m after is team success. “My son Campbell is now coming through the ranks, so I wanted to keep playing well to set an example for him. “Brooke (Tom’s wife) and the kids have supported me through many hectic cricket seasons, so they deserve a lot of the credit.” With East playing in this week- end’s Division One Grand Final, Tom said winning a premiership would be icing on the cake. “An Inness Medal is for an individual, but premiership suc- cess can be shared with the whole team,” he said. “In 10 years time I’m not going to sit down and have a beer with myself, I’d rather relive the premierships with my team- mates. “I’m lucky to have two pre- mierships (with Irymple and East), but after last year’s Grand Final disappointment I know it’s not an easy task. “We had a rough start this sea- son after losing a lot of players, so a premiership would be a great acheivement.” Facing a red-hot Merbein South, Tom said the key to victory would be winning the toss. “We need to bat first,” he said. “Posting a score of 200 plus would put us in the box seat. “We showed last week that 115 was enough, so an extra hundred on top of that would be hard to chase down. “The club has gotten so close since our last premiership in 2004, and I feel like the time is right for us to win another one.” • MAGNIFICENT: Tom Vadlja (INSET) claimed his seventh Sunraysia Cricket Association Les Innes Medal on Wednesday night, with his medal collection pictured ABOVE. Race one was held back in November, with Mick Osborne taking out the win, while the second race was held in February, where Sam Barnden took the honours. Both Mick and Sam will be missing for this weekend’s final round, with the current standings putting Damian Gibson on top of the leaderboard closely followed by Rohin Hollis and Jason Dawes. All other riders com- peting this Sunday will be riding for points in the 2014 aggregate series for the Coomealla Mountain- less Bike Club champion- ship, awarded to the rider with the most points over the entire season. Sunday’s race is open to all-comers, and will be held at the club’s Coomie course (located just past the Coomealla Golf Club). The course will be ap- proximately five kilome- tres in length, with race classes available for male and female riders in both senior and junior divi- sions. A recreation class will also be on offer for those just looking to give the sport a go. Registration starts at 8.15am, while racing will get underway at 9am. Cost is $5 for mem- bers, or $15 for non-MT- BA members. A barbecue lunch and a soft drinks will be avail- able post race for a gold coin donation, with more information available by visiting www.mountain- lessbikeclub.net.au.
