www.milduraweekly.com.au 2 Mildura Weekly – 18/04/14 MY word, this Telstra com- pany isn’t bad. It tells its customers that its new ‘Credit Re- porting Policy,’ (how’s that for a fancy name?) is now charging a higher adminis- tration fee on outstanding bills. Until recently, Telstra was charging a late pay- mentfeeof$15ifabillof $100 or more wasn’t paid by the due date. Now the telco giant has raised the bar...telling customers the fee will be imposed if a bill of $70 or more isn’t paid promptly. Strange thing is, one of our staff got a bill for less than $60, but with it came the warning that if he didn’t pay on time, a late fee of $15 would be charged. Just as a matter of in- terest, only a small portion of the bill was for actual calls. The bulk was for vari- ous fees, including phone rental of almost $40 a month, called number display and message bank service ($6 each), and a credit card processing fee. Labelled as one of the big- gest concert events to ever be held in the region, thousands of visitors are expected to arrive in Mildura on Saturday, May 17, with the concert expected to in- ject more than $1million back into the local economy. One of 90 musical acts from Mildura considered for the gig, WZRDKID – made up of DJ Chase Williams and MC James Cook – will headline the event alongside well-known Aus- tralian acts Illy, RÜFÜS, Dan Sultan, Violent Soho and The Jungle Giants. Not only will Chase and James have the chance to per- form in front of a packed crowd, they will also enjoy an opportu- nity to rub shoulders with five of the country’s hottest musical acts. Chase said the news had come as a shock, with neither he or James confident of win- ning the sought-after spot on the bill. “We were told last week that we had got the gig,” he said. “And it’s been really tough keeping the news to ourselves. “It’s going to be a crazy ex- perience, and to be in a position where we will potentially be performing in front of 10,000 people while learning from some great acts is just surreal.” WZRDKID is expected to perform a 30-minute set on the night – with the concert to mark the first time the duo have per- formed live on stage. “We’ve only been together as WZRDKID for the best part of eight months,” Chase said. “We’re planning on sneak- ing in a couple of gigs before One Night Stand, but in truth the event will probably be our first concert.” Triple J publicist Gerry Bull said the 90 Mildura-based art- ists in the running for the spot had represented a host of genres including rock, indie and elec- tronic acts. “Ultimately it was the futur- istic hip hop of WZRDKID that stood out to us,” she said. “Being removed from the influences of major capital cit- ies, Chase and James make mu- sic that sounds rather alien in comparison to a lot of Aussie hip hop. “We can’t wait to see the duo perform their dense elec- tronic productions and intro- spective raps in their first festi- val set at One Night Stand.” Chase and James were this week in the studio working on their first full-length album – Black Ocean – which they hope will be released prior to One Night Stand. “The first single from the album – ‘Hitchhikers Galaxy’ – has already been released on our Triple J Unearthed web- page,” Chase said. “Hopefully the album will be ready to go in time for One Night Stand, and hopefully this opportunity is the start of bigger and better things to come.” Triple J will broadcast the event live on radio from 2pm, with Matt and Alex and Zan Rowe to present live sets and interviews. The concert will also be broadcast live on ABC2 from 7pm with hosts The Doc- tor, Linda Marigliano and Lewi McKirdy. More information is avail- able by visiting www.triplej.net. au/onenightstand.
