Mildura Weekly : Friday April 18 2014 Vol 8 No 24
Mildura Weekly – 18/04/14 17 www.milduraphonebook.com.au THE Department of Environ- ment and Primary Industries has launched a statewide in- vestigation into the illegal commercial sale of firewood sourced from public land. DEPI Senior Forests Investi- gator Greg Chant said the aim of Operation Trident is to gath- er information from the com- munity about the illegal sale of firewood from public land, and then prosecute anyone found to have broken the law. “DEPI regional authorised officers will be conducting in- vestigations to determine the legality of commercial firewood suppliers across Victoria,” he said. “We know that firewood is being illegally removed from public land and sold, and this has been an issue for many years. “This activ- ity is making a profit from tak- ing firewood that should be available free of charge to the community dur- ing the domestic firewood season. “Any resi- dents out there who know of anyone buying or selling firewood taken from public land illegally should tell us. “Your information can be provided anonymously by call- ing DEPI on 136 186. “Commercial firewood suppliers need to have the ap- propriate licences and permits to sell firewood obtained from public land. “Commercial firewood sup- pliers must be able to produce their licence or permit to any- one considering buying fire- wood from them. “We also want to remind the community that it is illegal to remove firewood from pub- lic land, other than a domes- tic firewood coupe during the designated firewood collection seasons. “These domestic firewood coupes are not available to commercial firewood sellers. “By purchasing firewood from unlicensed suppliers, pur- chasers are undermining legiti- mate licensed firewood suppli- ers resulting in increased prices for firewood. “The illegal sale of firewood is viewed as a serious offence which attracts penalties of up to $7218, or one year imprison- ment or both.” DEPI manages Victoria’s public land and natural resourc- es with the aim of achieving the best results for the environment and the community. Illegal firewood sales in spotlight CMA staff health triumph MALLEE Catchment Management Au- thority and Sunraysia Community Health have celebrated a special achievement – being named the first businesses in the State to reach the initial milestone of the Healthy Together Achievement Pro- gram for workplaces. Joining 380 busi- nesses across Vic- toria registered as ‘Health Promoting Workplaces,’ the two Mildura businesses were among the first to complete the first phase of the pro- gram. The aim of the Achievement Pro- gram is to encour- age better health in the workplace, with staff responsible for encouraging their fel- low workers to lead a healthier life. Mallee Catch- ment Management Authority was the first of the two work- places to reach the milestone, and was recently officially pre- sented with a Certifi- cate of Achievement by the Parliamentary Secretary for Health, Georgie Crozier. Community Wellbeing and Ser- vices Portfolio Coun- cillor – and Chair of Mallee Catchment Management Author- ity – Sharyon Peart said she was delight- ed by the commit- ment and enthusi- asm shown by the 29 local workplaces in the region participat- ing in the Achieve- ment Program, and particularly proud of Mallee CMA’s dedica- tion to staff health. “It’s fantastic to see Mildura work- places showing lead- ership in health and wellbeing, and that they are starting to be recognised for their work,” she said.
