www.milduraweekly.com.au 56 Mildura Weekly – 25/04/14 By VINNIE RODI YACKANDANDAH’S Pete Denahy, 42, is as laid back as they come in the entertainment world. A talented bluegrass musician and come- dian, Pete has spent the past two decades per- forming alongside some of Australian Coun- try’s finest – including the legendary Slim Dusty – with his love of performing seeing him forge a successful career. It’s a career that has seen Pete travel to all corners of Australia, with his latest venture to see him return to Mildura this Sunday to per- form alongside another great of the country music industry in Lee Kernaghan. Appearing on the Nowingi Place stage for the first time as support for Kernaghan, Pete said he was excited to be back on the road after a long hiatus. “It’s been quite a while since I have performed in Mildura, and I must say I’m looking forward to the visit, and also looking for- ward to checking out Nowingi Place for the first time,” he said. “This tour is also the first time in a while that I’ve had the chance to hit the road, so I’m looking forward to visiting a number of towns – like Mildura – once again.” No stranger to Mildura, Pete said the trip would be a home- coming of sorts, with the per- former boasting a strong connec- tion to the region. “My wife is a former Ouyen resident,” he said. “When I met her I was actually living near Wangaratta, and decided to do a trip down the Murray playing a few gigs. “I met her during a gig in Coomealla, so in a way Mildura and the surrounding areas are one of my favourite places to visit.” Known for his “two-headed career” in comedy and bluegrass music, Pete boasts a number of successful releases during his time. Included is his YouTube song ‘Sort Of Dunno Nothin’ – a song that went viral – while also cutting his teeth doing comedy and playing fiddle as part of the Slim Dusty Show. “When I got offered a job in Slim Dusty’s band it was huge!” he said. “Since then I’ve been doing my own thing, playing festivals and solo shows, while also releasing a mix of comedy and bluegrass al- bums.” In July 2012 Pete worked at the Mel- bourne Cabaret Festival alongside Elliot Gob- let, Akmal Saleh and Flacco, and this year at the country music awards in Tamworth won a Golden Guitar for instrumental of the year – coming in ahead of the Davidson Brothers and Tommy Emmanuel. “To win a Golden Guitar is a huge hon- our,” he said. “While I have made my name as a musical comedian, my heart lies in the seri- ous, bluegrass style. “In truth the bluegrass and comedy goes hand-in-hand. “I love doing both the serious and com- edy stuff – they’re both a lot of fun. “I think as part of my time with Lee I’ll be doing 15 minutes of my own material, before joining Lee’s band for the rest of the night. “IlovewhatIdo.Igettogotosomany places and meet heaps of people, and it’s a job where you never stop learning.” Embracing music at a young age, Pete said his grandfather had been his biggest in- spiration growing up. “I’m half japanese, and my grandfather was a great musician,” he said. “He used to teach cello, and as kids we were always en- couraged to listen and play. “I learned piano and violin, and soon found a love in country music. “I love good instruments, and like a lot of musicians I dabble in quite a few.” Pete said that he was currently working on a new comedy album – called ‘Me’ – and planned to return to the studio following his touring commitments. “I’m hoping the album will be out in Au- gust,” he said. “It’s a bit of a look at myself, and while there’s plenty of stuff for a younger audience, the album does get a little editorial at times.” Tickets for this Sunday’s Nowingi Place performance are available through the Mil- dura Arts Centre and Mildura Visitor Infor- mation Centre, with cost $49.90 for adults, $44.90 for concession card holders, $24.90 for children and free for those under the age of 10.
