Mildura Weekly – 23/05/14 5 www.milduraphonebook.com.au THE creator of a revolution- ary program in Israel aimed at keeping young people en- gaged in school for longer briefed Mildura school prin- cipals this week about how it could help stem Sunraysia’s lagging student retention rates. It comes ahead of a round-table discussion at Par- liament House in Melbourne next week, where education experts, government, people from philanthropy, as well as the State’s Education Minister, Martin Dixon, will discuss the program and its potential for Victoria. Galia Arieli, who not only designed the ‘Maleh’ program but campaigned for about seven years in Israel to get it up and running, spoke at a fo- rum of Sunraysia primary and secondary schools on Tues- day, organised by the North- ern Mallee Local Learning and Employment Network, Mallee Family Care and Mildura Pri- mary School. About 25 percent of Sunraysia students drop out before finishing secondary school, which education ex- perts say severely limits their future career options. Maleh, a Hebrew acro- nym for ‘alternative learning space’, does as its name sug- gests - it provides an alterna- tive learning space, staffed by special caseworkers, targeted at students at risk of disengag- ing from education. These caseworkers de- velop relationships with the students, helping them get back into the classroom be- fore they become totally dis- engaged and leave school. Students can spend up to 15 hours a week in Maleh, however most only spend one or two hours a day. The rest of the time is spent in a normal classroom. Maleh is staffed by a com- bination of social workers, teachers and volunteers. Ever since MFC staff be- came aware of the program, they’ve been working to see a pilot introduced in Sunraysia. It’s hoped Ms Arieli’s vis- it to Mildura this week, and next week’s meeting in Mel- bourne, will help further the organisation’s cause. “I think maybe the time is right that, in particular the government, is open to look- ing at something like this,” MFCs Community Develop- ment Unit director, Fiona Harley, said. “It could be an excellent government philanthropy partnership as a pilot. “There are lots of differ- ent programs across Austra- lia that are addressing dis- engagement in secondary schools, but I’m not aware of anything like this.” Ms Arieli, a registered clinical criminologist with Israel’s Ministry of Health, and a qualified psychothera- pist and psychoanalyst, de- vised the Maleh program while working as a teacher helping isolated and disad- vantaged youth. She said one of the key differences between Maleh and the many other pro- grams aimed at getting young people ‘back on track’ is its flexibility and persis- tence. • Continued Page 10 Our school principals look to Israel for help • HELPING HAND: Maleh creator, Galia Arieli and Mallee Family Care Community Development Unit director, Fiona Harley. $13 99 $2999 $999 $2450 $10 99 $750 $11 99 $1299 $16 99 $11 50 $19 99 $950 VIAGRA VIAGRA SOMAC NEXIUM KARVEA DIABEX VIAGRA VIAGRA PARIET MICARDIS EFEXOR XR COVERSYL ALL PRODUCTS ON THIS PAGE NEED A PRESCRIPTION We will endeavour to maintain the retail prices for products in this prescription pricelist until 31st December 2014, however we reserve the right to increase our retail prices at any time, should our costs increase due to changes in Government policy and or supplier price increases.
