Mildura Weekly – 23/05/14 19 www.milduraphonebook.com.au ‘LET’S get involved’ is the catch- cry of one of the innovative new attractions at this year’s Mildura Field Days. It is also the name given to one of the field days’ marquees, show- casing Sunraysia volunteer groups with an interest in natural resource management. The marquee is a Mallee Catchment Management Author- ity (CMA) initiative, in partnership with Local Land Services (West- ern), Landcare, supported by the Australian Government. ‘Let’s get involved’ will be one of the highlights of a feature- packed field days being staged to- day and tomorrow at the Benetook Avenue SuniTAFE ovals and boast- ing a record number of exhibitors. The ‘Let’s get involved’ mar- quee will feature activities, dis- plays and demonstrations for all ages, Regional Landcare Facilitator Glen Sutherland promised. He will be joined by fellow Regional Landcare Facilitator Kaye Gottschutzke, and supported by Local Landcare Facilitator Nicola Vaughan, Regional Landcare Coor- dinator Kevin Chaplin, and Land Coordinator Narelle Beattie. Lots to see and do In the marquee you can: • Learn about the amazing and essential bats of our region with David Gee, Sunraysia’s very own Batman. • Meet the people from Bird- Life Mildura who conduct regular bird surveys for Trust for Nature’s Ned’s Corner, Mildura Wastewater Treatment Centre and Lower Mur- ray Water. • Meet the men from Sun- raysia Men’s Shed and see them construct nesting boxes for local wildlife. These nest boxes will be donated to Sunraysia Wildlife Car- ers’ Group. For those with an interest in outdoor activities there will be members from the Sunraysia Bushwalking Club in attendance, as well as members of the Mildura 4WD Club and the Wentworth Angling Club Fort Courage. • Discover the strange and wonderful underwater world by exploring the Mallee Catchment Management Authority’s Water Watch Trailer and Murray-Darling Freshwater Research Centre’s inter- active displays. • If food is more your thing, then Sunraysia Fruit and Vegetable Swap, our region’s new commu- nity food swap program, will be hosting a ‘plant your own vegeta- bles’ demonstration and activity. • And, you can even try your hand at grinding wheat and mak- ing bread with the Sustainable Ag- riculture demonstration by Mallee Catchment Management Author- ity. • Interestingly, the Landcare groups with displays are the new- est in the region. Red Cliffs and District Community Landcare will be focusing their efforts to reha- bilitate the biodiversity and ac- cessibility of the iconic red cliffs for which their town is named; Cabarita Incorporated has a large interest in Lake Hawthorn and Benetook Chooks manage a hob- by farm that provides training and fun and meaningful activities for people with disabilities and the wider community. • Sunraysia Institute of Techni- cal and Further Education will be promoting its courses through the Department of Land and Environ- ment. The marquee shows and dem- onstrations are timed for 10am, midday and 2pm daily. A full pro- gram will be available by visiting the marquee at Site B1. While the ‘Let’s get involved’ marquee is very new, Mildura’s Sunrise Ag has been a regular at the field days for more than three decades. And for 2014, the firm is once again keeping Sunraysia horticul- tural growers firmly in mind. Sunrise Ag is the Sunraysia agent for Kubota, Croplands spray- ers, and Ben Wye slashers, and its showcase at this year’s field days will feature ranges from all three of these manufacturers. Kubota tractor models from 15hp to 126hp will be on display, with the Japanese manufacturer claiming a model to suit a vast range of on-farm purposes. RTVs in spotlight The tractor display will be complemented by a showcase of the maker’s earthmoving equip- ment, including its popular skid steer loader, and a trio of the com- pany’s increasingly sought-after RTVs – one diesel and two petrol models. The RTVs, that resemble a small utility, are making huge inroads into the corporate farm- ing world, and also appearing in increasing numbers on smaller properties too, Sunrise Ag man- ager, Steven Ayling, said. The reasons, he says, are nu- merous. First, the RTVs are safer than the vehicle they are now often replacing, the ubiquitous four- wheel motorcycle. “They are also very user friendly. The driver can just slide in and out of a cab...not having to throw a leg over the seat.” And, the controls are familiar, resembling a car with a steering wheel instead of handlebars, and with a foot-operated throttle. Steve also contends that as a tractor manufacturer, Kubota builds ‘a lot of tough’ into the ve- hicles. “They are a lot more robust than a four-wheel motorcycle, and likely to last a lot longer,” he said. They will also carry a larger load, with the diesel model hav- ing enough tray space for a pallet, and having tipper capabilities as well. They can also tow more than their motorcycle counterparts, Steve said. As well as the Kubota display, Sunrise Ag will bring a range of Australian-made Croplands spray- ers, and a range of the heavy duty Ben Wye Piranha slashers – “the toughest slashers in the country.” Find Sunrise Ag at site H17. Consult your field days guide, included in this edition of the Mildura Weekly, for a handy site map and full exhibitor list. This year’s 63rd Annual Mil- dura Field Days will be staged from 9am to 5pm today, and be- tween 9am and 4pm tomorrow at the SuniTAFE exhibition ovals on Benetook Avenue. The cost is $5 for adults, with children admitted free.
