Growing up on a sheep station near Ivanhoe in New South Wales, Carlie enjoyed a slightly different education to other kids, home schooled through Balranald Distance Education for her secondary years. It was while studying that she began to form an interest in sign writing. “I always had a fascination with that line of work,” she said. “I had a love of cars, and always enjoyed seeing what sign writers could do them. “I guess that interest turned into a potential career path, and so many years later here I am with my own sign writing business.” Fast forward to today, and Carlie is the owner of one of the fastest growing sign and promotional businesses in the district, specialising in signage and advertising needs. The business – which has been running for six years – caters to a number of different markets, and produces everything from signs and shop front designs to banners, posters, custom print clothing, business cards, stubby holders and stationary, with most of the products printed in house resulting in faster turnaround times and better quality control. “While predominately the business produces signs and promotional products for a variety of clientele, our in-house printed stubby holders are probably our most popular product,” Carlie said. Carlie’s journey to owning her own business started in 2005, when she opted to leave the family property at age 15 to start a school- based apprenticeship in Mildura. She began a Certificate III in Off-Site Construction under Sign Writing while completing her VCE, before leaving school to continue her apprenticeship full-time with Kevin Brown Graphics. “I spent three years with Kevin before deciding I wanted to go back to school and finish Year 12,” Carlie said. “At the time I wasn’t sure if sign writing was the right path” It wasn’t long before Carlie performed a complete 360 on her chosen career path, saying she had come to the realisation that sign writing was indeed the right profession for her. “I took the opportunity to start my own business – which actually start in my mother’s garage – and it’s the best decision I’ve ever made,” she said. “To come from a sheep station in isolated New South Wales to where I am today is a great personal achievement.” Carlie Rees Custom Design Signs is located at 3/48 Tenth Street Mildura, with more information, or to obtain a quote, available by contacting 0488 177 083, or by visiting www. customdesignsigns.com.au WOMEN INBUSINESS Carlie building a successful future // Pictured above are a few of Carlies custom creations; Icy Pole Holders, Coffee Mugs, Phone & Tablet Cases & Coasters // Pictured above are a few of Carlies custom 135 Deakin Avenue | www.mildurafinance.com.au AUSTRALIAN CREDIT LICENCE: 385395 Secure your car before June 30 Beat the tax man.
