Mildura Weekly – 27/06/14 13 www.milduraphonebook.com.au Emergency, armed services special open day MILDURA residents will have the opportu- nity to attend a Emer- gency Services and Armed Services Open Day on Tuesday, July 8, from 10am to 2pm at Aero Ovals (Num- ber 3). Participants will have the chance to browse through a number of marquees relating to both the emergency and armed services, with the aim to recruit new members to both organisations. A fitness obstacle course, barbecue and giveaways will also be a feature of the day, with more informa- tion available by con- tacting Jim on 0427 210 593. WENTWORTH’S grand old dame of the rivers – the Paddle Steamer Ruby – is getting ready to embark on two commercial cruises that proponents are her- alding as a ‘taste of the age of steam.’ The Ruby will be offer- ing two overnight cruises next month, the first from Went- worth to Mildura, and the sec- ond the return leg. The cruises have been scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, July 19 and 20. The cruises include meals and accommodation and the tickets cost $195 twin share. The Ruby is also offering day and short cruise options for the same cruises. On Day 1, the Saturday, Wentworth to Mildura Home- stead – 9am to 4pm and includ- ing a meal is $75 per person. The deal is the same on Day 2, the Sunday, Mildura Home- stead to Wentworth – 10.30am to 4pm. Other, shorter cruises are available at $35, and include ei- ther morning or afternoon tea. For more details, or to make a booking, contact the Wentworth Visitor Information Centre on (03) 5027 5080 or in person at 66 Darling Street, Wentworth. Ruby July cruises A GROUP of All Star Train- ing students celebrated the successful completion of their Certificate I in Asset Maintenance (Cleaning) and Vocational Preparation courses last week with a spe- cial luncheon at Fasta Pasta. All 15 graduates are cli- ents at Life Skills on Pine and the Mildura Christie Centre, with Mallee Fam- ily Care Executive Director Vernon Knight on hand to make the presentation. All Star Training Man- ager Vicki Dane, INSET, said the courses – which have been running for 12 months – not only exposed students to further learning opportunities, but prepared them for future employ- ment. “The last six weeks of their training saw the stu- dents complete work place- ments in the community,” she said. “Areas in which the stu- dents did their placement included cleaning, car wash- ing, gardening and retail, and of the 16 students who enrolled, 12 are graduating with near perfect results. “Even more impressive is the result of four students, who have received offers of employment – with two of them already working in the areas of cleaning and gar- dening.” “One other student is volunteering at Mallee Family Care’s Opportunity Knocks shop to further de- velop her retail and cus- tomer service skills, and is hoping to secure full-time employment as a result. “We couldn’t be happier with the results achieved by this year’s participants.” This year marked the first time All Star Train- ing – now falling under the Mallee Family Care banner – has run these courses in partnership with the Mildu- ra Christie Centre and Life Skills on Pine, with Vicki saying the group planned on continuing the partner- ship. “The benefits for partici- pants are numerous,” she said. “Not only do they be- come better equipped to en- ter the workforce, but they also improve communica- tion skills and a number of other areas. “Our goal is to continue offering theses courses in the future, and to expand what we offer participants.” Valuable life skills for All Star graduates • WELL DONE!: All Star graduates Sarah Davis, Matthew Reyne, Mandy O’Neil, Michael Murnane and Trudy Wright are rightfully proud of their achievement.
