A corporate enterprise of the Mildura Weekly Ph: 5021 1782 www.milduraphonebook.com.au 27,337 COPIES DISTRIBUTED WEEKLY For more info visit www.auditbureau.org.au By ALAN ERSKINE EIGHT years ago, when we were plan- ning the launch of the Mildura Weekly, one of the most im- portant topics listed for discussion was how to report on the lighter side of life... amusing anecdotes or interesting snippets from around Australia and the world, pho- tographs, stories and cartoons. The suggestion adopted was a Page of Chaff (see above), a page, or part page, of anything and ev- erything that might amuse, interest, edu- cate and above all, en- tertain readers of both genders, of all ages and from all walks of life. From Day One, we’ve had such a posi- tive response from readers that we’ve de- cided to publish the best of Chaff in book form. The Mildura Week- ly ‘Best of Chaff’ is hot off the press...122 pages of the Best of Chaff over the first five years, and now avail- able for just $20 at Mildura Weekly head- quarters, 424 San Ma- teo Avenue, Mildura. If this book doesn’t have you in stitches, nothing will, and we’ve released it with plenty of time to make sure of your copy for Father’s Day. It’s also perfect as a birthday present or some other special occasion, or just to leave on the coffee table to peruse when you have time. The Best of Chaff is in an easy-to-read format, we’ve tried to make the items short and sharp, and the font is a larger size than normal to make it easier to read. Now the ‘dis- claimer’...as well as hundreds of favour- able comments from well-wishers and ca- sual contributors since Chaff started with this newspaper in November, 2006... we’ve taken a few hits, mainly from people who don’t see the humour in blonde and/or Irish jokes. They might not see the funny side of life, but we do, and interest- ingly, many of the Chaff items for the newspa- per, now reproduced in book form, have been submitted by people with Irish an- cestry, or who have a blonde streak. Our Chaff items are not meant to cause offence...we are sim- ply passing on jokes and amusing anec- dotes that come in from across a wide readership area, of- ten from many parts of Australia, and oc- casionally, various re- gions of the world. Most agree that in these days of bend- ing over backwards to please civil liber- tarians, walking on eggshells to avoid any- thing racial, culturally- sensitive or offensive to any religion, it’s good to see that many readers are still enjoy- ing the lighter side of life, even if the joke is at their expense. Our editorial de- partment says the best thing about this book (and Page 2 Chaff) in general, is the fact that the bulk of the content has been sup- plied by you, the reader, and in particular, a dozen or so regulars. We’ve all read about the amusing, the unusual, the topical, the amazing, the skilful, the young, the old and the bold, often depicted in photographic or cartoon form, and to our contributors we pass on our grateful thanks for making the effort to share these moments in time with readers.... and encour- age everyone to keep up the good work. We couldn’t fit ev- ery item that’s been published in our Page Two Chaff over the past (almost) eight years into this book, but it’s jam-packed with the best of the best covering our first five years of publish- ing, and we know readers will enjoy that part of our journey. We’re not sure if there will be a sequel, but Page Two chaff in the Mildura Weekly will certainly live on, so if you have an inter- esting tale, an amusing anecdote or a (clean) joke to pass on, sim- ply email newsdesk@ milduraweekly.com./ au ‘The Best of Chaff’ is a limited edition, as well as a collector’s item, so make sure you get in early for your copy. Chaff...the husks of corn or other seed...husks, hulls, bran, pods, seed cases, shells, capsules or sheaths separated by winnowing or threshing...in other words...separating the chaff from the grain. Also referred to as ‘chopped hay and straw used as fodder,’ or...’worthless things.’ Chaff has also been described as rubbish, refuse, waste, garbage, litter, discarded matter, debris, scrap, flotsam and jetsam, sweepings, leaves, leftovers, remains, scraps, dregs, off- scourings, odds and ends, muck, trash, junk...”just so much chaff.” - Online dictionary. Chaff has been a hugely popular part of the Mildura Weekly since 2006. And now... We’re doing it by the book! • It wasn’t the ‘chaff’ that horse ‘Ted’ was expecting, but he was keen to take a look at our new book, named after one of his favourite foodstuffs all the same, much to the delight of Mildura Weekly general manager Stuart Mensch.
