Mildura Weekly – 11/07/14 5 www.milduraphonebook.com.au Clutterbuck seeks Labor commitment INDEPENDENT candidate for Mildura Jo Clutterbuck is seeking commitment from the Labor Party on issues including man- agement of the Mildura Base Hospital and returning the dis- trict’s passenger rail service ahead of the November Victorian elec- tion. Mrs Clutter- buck met with Shadow Parlia- mentary Secre- tary for Regional and Rural De- velopment and Agriculture, Jaa- la Pulford, on Wednesday as part of her push to seek the party’s support on those and other issues. “Issues dis- cussed included serious concerns in relation to the Coalition Gov- ernment’s Private Health Care Bill that is currently awaiting passage through Parliament and the im- plications for health care services, includ- ing aged care in our region,” she said. Other issues included “successive gov- ernments’ policies on water reform and the associated impact on our farmers and irrigators and our region as a whole.” Mrs Clutterbuck said it was important voters were informed on the major parties’ policies before the November election. • NO PARTY LINES: Independent candidate for Mildura in the November Victorian election, Jo Clutterbuck says she’ll advocate for the region based on its needs, not party lines. THE Australian Country Alliance this week announced its two can- didates for Northern Victoria in the Legislative Council. Former Campaspe Shire Coun- cillor Robert Danieli and Sheppar- ton small business owner Steve Threlfall will represent the party, which was formerly known as the Country Alliance. Mr Danieli said agriculture and water policy, rural infrastruc- ture, small business and local government reforms were among areas he would focus on. Mr Threlfall meanwhile was the party’s lead candidate in the last State election, and while se- curing a strong primary vote, missed out on being elected. Australian Country Alliance secretary, Darren Cooper, said the party only narrowly missed out on getting elected in the Northern Victorian region at the last elec- tion, which he said showed sup- port for a shift from the major parties. Mr Cooper said it showed “country Victoria is starting to get fed up with the major parties and the years of neglect by current rep- resentatives, which seems to take them for granted every time.” Country Alliance candidates announced • Robert Danieli • Steve Threlfall MILDURA Rural City Council Mayor Glenn Milne said both State Government and Council need to consider providing more support to the annual Hattah Desert Race following another successful event last weekend. Cr Milne estimated that the event, which runs over three days (including Friday night’s scrutineering/meet-and-greet) injected about $1million into the local economy, with the majority of the almost 600 competitors and their families and support crews travelling from outside the district to compete. He said the race was much more than simply a sporting event. It was now part of the district’s major events arsenal. Cr Milne said that despite the size and success of the event, the fact it was still run by a relatively small group of vol- unteers was often forgotten by the community. “You’ve really got to pay tribute to Gary (Leeson - North West Victorian Motorcycle Club president) and the guys that run the event,” he said. “They do an amazing job and people really don’t make enough fuss about that. “They work all year round on this event, and it’s our cara- van parks, motels, eating hous- es, motorbike shops - a whole range of businesses - that ben- efit from this group of volun- teers that work their guts out for a whole year. “It’s a massive amount of work, which includes a huge re- sponsibility for the safety of the riders and the rules and regula- tions they need to adhere to. “The community needs to be grateful for all that work, and even the government and us as a council need to con- sider how much support we give considering the amount of work that goes into it. “I think the government could consider putting more into it because it’s a major event for regional Victoria. Mo- torsport tends to be neglected finance-wise.” Cr Milne pointed to Aus- tralia’s other major desert race, the Finke Desert Race in the Northern Territory, in terms of the government support it at- tracts, which is in the vicinity of $300,000 each year. Friday night’s scrutineering, in Langtree Avenue between Seventh and Eighth Streets, is an event in itself, with the road closed to traffic and all compet- itor bikes on display. Mildura City manager Cathy Violi said the Friday night component of the Hattah weekend provided a significant benefit to the majority of busi- nesses in the immediate area. “It’s a real family atmo- sphere, there’s never any trou- ble, it’s a really great event,” Ms Violi said. Long-time Langtree Avenue business operator and owner of the Pizza Cafe, Joseph Carraz- za, said his business recorded a boost of up to 40 percent over a normal winter Friday night. “It’s a fantastic night, really good, and I think there should be more events like this,” Mr Carrazza said. “There’s no trouble, it’s a good crowd, a lot of families as well, and a lot of different age groups, and they all need to compete the next day, so by about 10.30pm the street is cleared and we still close at our normal time. “It’s a two-way thing as well. They need somewhere to do their scrutineering and we have the venues to provide them with food and a place to relax. “And being in the middle of the school holidays, it gives tourists something else to see as well.” Mayor encourages increased support for big Hattah race • MAJOR EVENT: The outback Mallee scrub is transformed into pit tent city on the Hattah Desert Race weekend as hundreds of competitors from as far away as the Northern Territory flock to the district to compete. • Next Business Day Turnaround • Many Styles and Sizes to choose • Plastic/Plastic-Metal/All Metal/ Rubber • 12 Ink colours • Hand Stamps - 50 sizes available 424 San Mateo Ave, Mildura Ph: 50211 777 | Fax 50211 733 E: mwreception@milduraweekly.com.au
