www.milduraweekly.com.au 18 Mildura Weekly – 18/07/14 mental health, early intervention and disability centre mental health, early intervention and disability centre Mallee Family Care’s Community Mental Health Service supports people in the community aged 16 to 64 who are suffering from a severe or chron- ic mental health illness, or who have complex needs. The service is staffed by a team of 10 Commu- nity Support Mental Health workers, who have the expertise to help people across a broad range of conditions and needs. “It’s about moving towards integration into the community after a mental health crisis,” Mal- lee Family Care director of Disabilities and Men- tal Health Support Services, Cath Murphy said. “That could be anything from helping a per- son with their timetable to restructuring their day. It could also be getting them to the point of volunteering in the community and, ultimately, education and employment.” All Star Access concentrates on helping people with varying levels of disability or disadvan- tage gain new skills and, ultimately, main- stream employment. The program provides more than 50 peo- ple at any one time with supported employ- ment through its Disability Enterprises, which include gardening, cleaning, printing services, retailing through ‘Opportunity Knocks’, recy- cling and cleaning. Mallee Family Care says the benefits of the program are two-fold. Firstly, participants gain experience and learn new skills which in many cases will secure individuals with meaningful employ- ment. Secondly, All Star Access provides a high quality, professional suite of services that pro- vide service options for customers. “The community is getting a professional, commercial grade product, equal to any ser- vice in the community, with the added benefit of giving back to the community by provid- ing opportunities for people to develop new skills,” Mallee Family Care’s director of Dis- abilities and Mental Health Support Services, Cath Murphy said.
