Mildura Weekly – 18/07/14 49 www.milduraphonebook.com.au By ADAM LUITJES CROSSFIT YouFit trainer Lee Garra- way, 37, has proved that age is only a number by winning the advanced male category at the recent CrossFit Hamilton Throwdown. The oldest athlete in his divi- sion, Lee pushed himself in gruel- ling qualifying workouts that in- cluded weight-lifting, muscle-ups, rowing, squats and ‘burpees.’ After progressing into the fi- nal, Lee faced three back-to-back workouts involving Olympic lift- ing, handstand push-ups, double- unders, rope climbs and box jumps. “I was wrecked when I finished,” Lee said. “It was the hardest work- out I had done, because it chal- lenged me physically and mentally. “I had never done that many workouts in one day, so I just want- ed to be consistent and get a score on the board.” Taking on some of the best CrossFit athletes in the State, Lee decided to take a ‘one step at a time’ approach. In one of the workouts, he was the only competitor not to drop his 35kg sandbag while squatting and thrusting it in the air for eight min- utes. It was the first time Lee had competed in an individual competi- tion in his four years doing CrossFit. His accomplishment was even more astonishing considering he waited until the 11th hour to enter the event. He had planned – with a group of local CrossFitters – to compete in the team event, but one of his team- mates pulled out due to illness. Deciding not to let the opportu- nity go to waste, Lee checked to see if there was any individual spots still open. “I emailed CrossFit Hamilton to let them know we couldn’t make it, and they said there was a spot left in the advanced males category,” he said. “I entered purely to give it a go, and see where my fitness was at.” Having not told anyone he was competing, Lee was overwhelmed by the support he received when his fiancee Je-Hanna Garnaut posted his result on Facebook. “The amount of messages I got was overwhelming,” he said. “The support they showed and the mo- tivation they gave me was brilliant. “We have people aged 16 to 65 coming here (YouFit) and the way they train day in, day out, is so mo- tivating and inspiring.” Lee says that team environment was one of the reasons he decided to become a CrossFit trainer, and says it’s a sport that’s suitable for people of all ages. “People think you have to be extremely fit to do CrossFit, but we look at it as a health and well-being program,” he said. “We have house- wives, mums, daughters, fathers and sons all training together. “It’s not about competing. At YouFit it’s about helping people lose weight, tone up, reduce stress and become more positive in their everyday life. “Everyone has their personal journey, and we are lucky enough to be able to help them on their way.” More information on CrossFit YouFit is available by contacting Lee on 0438 502 008.
