Mildura Weekly : Friday July 25 Vol 8 No 38
www.milduraweekly.com.au 16 Mildura Weekly – 25/07/14 By GRANT MAYNARD THERE was, the popular children’s nursery rhyme tells us, an old woman who lived in a shoe! Not to be outdone, Mil- dura boasts a young woman who paints shoes. Her first pair were a spe- cial birthday present for a younger sibling. Painted in green and black, and using some of the original white canvas too, they had a ‘Wick- ed’ stage musical theme. Then Alicia Curtis, 19, the daughter of Fred and Helen, found that two of her even younger sisters wanted special shoes too. What followed was another pair paying homage to boy band ‘One Direction,’ and a third pair based on the 1986 movie ‘Labyrinth,’ starring, amongst others, music leg- end David Bowie. Now, a little more than six months since she paint- ed her first pair, Alicia has found her artistic niche, be- coming a member of the Za- fonze artists’ collective and selling her shoes under the ‘Altose’ brand. “It was just a word that came to me,” Alicia ex- plained when asked about the brand name, and now all her shoes carry a stylised ‘A’ on the rear, her signature if you like. Each pair of custom shoes takes about two days work to complete, but Alicia admits some of that is time spent waiting for paint to dry before more is added. She fits her shoe artistry in between studying a Bach- elor of Zoology through the University of New England, and working as a medical re- ceptionist. She has plenty of ideas for shoes well into the future, but says she is willing to take commissions. If someone has something in mind, she is more than willing to lis- ten! Alicia’s shoes will be just one of the highlights of a special Zafonze Boutique open day tomorrow from 8.30am onwards at its 132A 8th Street headquarters. The day will showcase the talents of several local artisans including photog- rapher Harmony Dennison; T-shirt designer ‘Art by Amy;’ ink and watercolours by the Clutterbug Collective; and Elijah Pezzanti’s exclusive Ducklife Clothing label. The featured artists will be in-store throughout the day to meet with customers. Zafonze Boutique is Eli- jah’s creation, and aimed squarely at showcasing his own label, and giving other artists in the region an outlet for their work. Tomorrow’s open day is an extension of that philoso- phy, and an informal first birthday party for the bou- tique. Elijah intends to con- tinue to expand his Zafonze clothing and accessories range that to date also in- cludes quality leather hand- bags and silver jewellery. In the future, for ex- ample, he hopes to be able to stock dresses designed by Melbourne-based former lo- cal, Adrian Lamattina. “I would love to fill the shop with art, clothing and accessories produced by local talent,” Elijah says. “A real showcase of the depth of talent that we have here...and giving artists and designers an outlet for their work. “The best thing that could happen is that this store gets too small, and we have to move to larger premises. That has to be good for locally produced fashion and art!” The open day will be fol- lowed by a celebration of art and fashion at The Attic from 10pm, and featuring The 4AR. Entry will be free for those making a purchase from Zafonze during the open day celebration, and $5 for all others. There was a young woman who painted shoes...
