Distributed FREE every Friday FRIDAY, AUGUST 1, 2014 WWW.MILDURAWEEKLY.COM.AU VOL 8 #39 Betty, you’re our Hero Vocal reception for the Premier Betty Krake is the eyes and ears of the Red Cliffs community, a lifelong community contributor, and a worthy choice as the first of the Mildura Weekly/Tankard Dental Community Heroes. See Page 16. VICTORIAN Premier Denis Napthine’s street walk though Mildura’s central business district yesterday afternoon didn’t go according to plan when he was confronted and shadowed by a small, but vocal group of protestors. Ambulance Victoria and Country Fire Authority union members trailed the Premier throughout his 30-minute walk through the Langtree Mall and surrounding streets, protesting against funding cuts and ongoing negotiations over work and pay conditions. It led to a heated exchange at one point as the Premier and a union member argued over a point in the negotiations before the Premier and his entourage moved on, stopping to talk to several retailers and shoppers as he made his way down the mall, along Eighth Street and down Lime Avenue. See BEN PISCIONERI’S story, and more PAUL MENSCH photographs, on Page 3.
