30 SPORT MILDURA WEEKLY FRIDAY, AUGUST 1, 2014 By ADAM LUITJES SUNRAYSIA Academy of Sport athlete Zac Hermans, 17, will call Canberra home next year after ac- cepting a full Australian Institute of Sport volleyball scholarship. The Year 11 St Joseph’s Col- lege student joins Brad Mason as the second volleyballer from the region to be selected for the pres- tigious program. Making the life-changing move in January, Zac will have access to the best volleyball coaches and facilities in the country. Along with training at a high level, Zac will also study music at the University of Canberra’s Lake Ginninderra Senior Second- ary College. “That was the first thing I checked,” Zac said. “I wanted to make sure I could finish my certificate three, and carry on studying music in Year 12.” After impressing at the re- cent Australian Junior Volley- ball Championships, the 197cm pass-hitter was invited to attend a four-day AIS training camp. One of only three boys from the camp to be offered a scholar- ship, Zac is looking forward to mixing with Australia’s best Un- der 18 volleyballers. “We trained twice a day, and it was a good chance to check out the AIS,” he said. “I love the weeks away where I can get high quality coaching, and knowing I’m going to get that every day is awesome.” Travelling 540km to Mel- bourne most weekends, Zac is excited at the prospect of having elite coaching on his doorstep. “I am going to have a lot more free time,” he said. “It releases the stress of doing my homework in the car, and having to juggle my time during the week.” Having al- ready made Aus- tralia’s Under 18 side, Zac is hoping this op- portunity will be the catalyst for future success. “I know a few mates who have gone on to play club or college volleyball in Canada and Switzerland,” he said. “Brad Mason went to Canada for a year and really loved it. “I’m going to try and get my foot in the door, everyone who has gone overseas says it’s worth it.” Zac said his success would not have been possible without the help of his parents, local vol- leyball coach Paul Freckleton and the Sunraysia Academy of Sport.
