Mildura Weekly : Friday August 15 Vol 8 No 41
12 MILDURA WEEKLY FRIDAY, AUGUST 15, 2014 Gregg & Sons Steel PTYPTYLTD AFTER SIX YEARS, GREGG AND SONS ARE STEEL GOING STRONG Friendly service, competitive prices and a ‘can do’ attitude are the hallmarks of Buronga’s Gregg and Sons Steel. Established in 2008 by local steel merchant Brian Gregg, wife Sandra and sons Leon and Evan, the multi-million dollar business now employs seven staff and boasts a fleet of four trucks, two utilities and a semi- trailer. An innovative business, Gregg and Sons offers full drive- through service, and as a delivery service area embracing up to 1000km radius of Mildura, covering large areas of three states. Brian, 63, has been in the steel business all his adult life, in one form or another, with a few years as an expert consultant to a leading Australian company before having a spell for three years, concentrating on the family farm at Boeill Creek. But the steel business was in his blood, and when a suitable location in the main street of Buronga came up in 2008, Brian and Sandra jumped at the opportunity to set up the new business. They are justifiably proud of what the business has achieved over the past six years. “I never dreamed it would grow to this extremity,” he said. “I take between 50 to 100 phone calls a day, with 25 to 35 customers coming in daily, and that’s not including our account customers.” Having spent 45 years in the steel industry, Brian knows a thing or two about running a successful business. “We pride ourselves on fast, friendly and efficient service,” he said. “There is no such word as ‘can’t’ in our vocabulary, because we will always find a way to give the customer what they want. “We offer a delivery service that is unheard of, we are a family business, and we give personalised service. The secret is to treat people how you would like to be treated.” If working 12 hour days wasn’t enough, Brian spends roughly 26 weekends a year “driving around the bush” to make deliveries. He says it’s that hard work that has led to the company’s strong reputation within the region. “The customer who comes off the street gets the same service as the big companies,” Brian said. “We give people what they want, when they want it, and how they want it. “And I’m very proud working with two of my sons... it’s hard work, but we have been here for six years, and haven’t had a disagreement. “We treat our employees like part of the family... you spend two-thirds of your life at work, so why not make it a happy place.” Gregg and Sons Steel sell a variety of steel products including rural fencing, farm gates, aluminium sheets and profiles, downee fittings, door tracks, pipes, angles and mesh. They also do punching, bending and ligature bending. They are located at 4-6 Short Street, Buronga, and open 7am to 5pm Monday to Friday, and 8am to midday every Saturday.
